The History
Founded almost 60 years ago, country club of north carolina has grown into a well-established residential community within a 2,000-acre property that is anchored by two fine golf courses. The Cardinal course is a Willard Byrd design and the Dogwood is an Ellis Maples design that both feature sweeping sandhill terrain just minutes from Pinehurst Resort.

In the beginning, country clubs were a popular social institution that offered access to all ages and backgrounds. However, the Great Depression resulted in a sharp decline in new country clubs, and many closed their doors. Roughly one in seven clubs went bankrupt during the depression, and countless projects for new golf courses, clubhouses and other amenities were shelved. These problems, coupled with the polio crisis and the rise of pools as the preferred recreation facilities for middle-class families, signaled a critical problem for country clubs.
The Courses
The Country Club of North Carolina offers two 18-hole courses, the Dogwood and the Cardinal. Located just outside Pinehurst in the Sandhills region, CCNC offers a truly unique golf experience to members and visitors alike.
The Dogwood Course is an Ellis Maples and Willard Byrd design that has been ranked as one of the best in North Carolina for many years. Arthur Hills undertook further renovations in 1999 and Chris Spence rejuvenated the back nine in 2016.
The Cardinal course, which opened in 1970, is another fine layout that has been rated among the top 20 in North Carolina. It offers a great challenge to players of all skill levels. Water comes into play on the outward nine, and there are a few long par 5s that test the player’s ability to move his tee shot up and down the hillside. The course is also a delight to walk and it’s a credit to architect Tom Fazio that he managed to keep the course playable and not too difficult for the average golfer.
